Dengue virus non-structural protein 1 (NS1 Ag) rapid test kits are available from manufacturers in various countries including the United States, Germany, and China. As of 2013, no Dengue virus NS1 Ag rapid test kits are approved for use in the United States. This term was based on, but not limited in use to, the BIOCREDIT Rapidgen Dengue NS1 Ag test kit that uses a lateral flow chromatographic immunoassay. Testing can be done in under 20 minutes on serum, plasma or whole blood. This is a screening test and reactive specimens must be confirmed with alternative methods.

Dengue viruses are in the Flavivirus genus of the Flaviviridae family. Flaviviruses are enveloped, single-strand RNA viruses. The genomic RNA encodes three structural proteins, C (core protein), M (membrane protein), and E (envelope protein). The nonstructural (NS) proteins are NS1, NS2a, NS2b, NS3, NS4a, NS4b, and NS5. NS1 is a glycoprotein that appears to be essential for virus viability but has no established biological activity. NS1 is produced in both membrane-associated and secreted forms. The NS1 antigen is present at high concentrations patients during the early clinical phase of the disease. PMID: 16988003
